Wild Ones Unveils Free Native Garden Design for Indianapolis

| General

Wild Ones has released a new, free native garden design specifically tailored for our local area in Indianapolis, Indiana. This design, created in collaboration with the Indiana Native Plant Society, is one of six upcoming releases as part of the Native Garden Design Program – a national initiative that provides eco-friendly, region-specific garden plans across the United States.

As featured in the recent New York Times article by Margaret Roach, Wild Ones’ Native Garden Design program is gaining national attention for its innovative approach to promoting native plant landscaping. Our chapter is proud to be part of this movement.

Indianapolis Design Highlights:

The new Indianapolis Native Garden Design is specifically crafted for the Eastern Corn Belt Plains ecoregion, which covers much of Indiana. This diverse landscape, once dominated by beech and elm-ash forests, now faces environmental challenges that make it essential to incorporate resilient native plants to support local biodiversity and adapt to changing conditions.

  • Ephemeral Glade and Sedge Lawn: Featuring spring ephemerals, shade-loving asters, and goldenrods, along with low-maintenance sedge lawns that reduce mowing.
  • Water Management: Includes a pond, dry riverbed, and rain barrels to manage stormwater and conserve resources.
  • Sustainable Practices: Composting areas, raised vegetable beds, and permeable surfaces are highlighted among other eco-friendly gardening methods.
  • Habitat Creation: The design offers essential food sources and habitats for local wildlife and pollinators, featuring a pond and native plantings that support birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects.

The plan integrates a variety of native plants that thrive in local conditions, ensuring year-round interest and ecological resilience. The design is also thoughtfully phased, making it easy for anyone to implement parts of it in their own yard, regardless of space or resources.
